Mike, in earlier posts you referenced the new features of 2003 DNS. I have
a forest with 13 child domains. There are two root DNS servers and a DNS
server for each child domain, connected by at least a T1. I have not had a
chance to test 2003 yet. Do you know if there are issues or advantages to
upgrading the existing DNS structure in place, or reconfiguring prior to
upgrading? Most zones are in AD integrated mode now. Would there be any
advantages to first making those secondary servers to the root domain
servers? We want to be able to replicate most zones around the forest, and
allow the local admins to maintain their own servers. From what I read, we
also need to run Enterprise Edition to get the new DNS features?

Thanks for your help.

If I may jump in here and try to answer your questions. I'm sure Michael's
out of the office until after the weekend. I'm sure Michael will provide
additional information.

You would have to upgrade all your DCs to get the ability to replicate to
their AD's Application partition, sinc eit won't work with W2k's Active
Directory. You can upgrade the current DNS servers to help you towards that
goal to setup your infrastructure first. But as far as replicating the AD
Integrated zones to all domains in the forest, that feature won't be
available until all DCs are upgraded, since it's a function that's based on
Win2003 Active Directory.

Yes, Enterprise Edition is what's needed for this functionality.

Have a good weekend!

No problemo! We're already planning our forest upgrade. I noticed the
requirement for Enterprise edition. Glad we caught that before we started
the upgrades. The other thing I was wondering about (haven't RTFM yet on
2003 DNS) is if we need to consider restructuring our current DNS scheme, or
just upgrade over the top and eventually enable the new features. We
currently have child domains managing their own DNS servers using AD
integrated zones. I just openly wondered if it would be better to make all
of the child domain DNS servers secondary DNS servers before the upgrades,
or if it didn't matter. It seems like we could/should leave it as-is and
upgrade to Enterprise Edition 2003. Thanks, I'll be out mowing the lawn...
Jim.
