Hello all,

My company is migrating to Office 2003 on WinXP from Office 2000 on W2k. I
have tried Google etc, but could not locate if there is a know issues or bugs
list that people have experienced in the past.

If there is not a list but there are examples of what to expect (like the
Microsoft Inch/Pica measurement fix you helped me out with two days ago) I
would really appreciate any suggestions or advice on what should be expected.

In our case PowerPoint is used as a DTP package producing thousands of print
reports each year of between 20 and 400 pages in size.

Thanks for your suggestions and assistance.

I don't know of such a list, but here are a few things off the top of my head --

1. PPT 2003 has a different Org Chart mechanism than PPT 2000. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293212&Product=off2003
and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826835&Product=off2003

2. PPT 2003 won't let you export B/W images or do a B/W Send to Word as PPT 2000 did. See http://www.echosvoice.com/gotchas.htm#Save as Image (B/W) for specifics

3. PPT 2003's animations are vastly different than PPT 2000's. There are exit animations and motion paths now. Some of the animations from PPT 2000 files will probably need to be reworked in PPT 2003. If your presentations include sound across slides, those settings will almost certainly need to be reset.

4. In PPT 2000, you could drag text from a textbox onto the top of a placeholder where it says "Click here to add text." You can no longer do this in PPT 2003.

Of course, this small list doesn't include things like the need for training on how to use the new Office-wide Task Panes, multiple masters in PPT, things like that.

Another big one if you use animations and print: The ability to print the
slides one animation (or build) at a time is no longer an option. If you
need to do this, you will need to look into Shyam's Capture Show Add-in.
Information on that tool can be found at URL:

What the others said. And:

- If there are embedded fonts in the presentation and they're not edit-enabled
for embedding and they're not on the PC itself, then PPT2003 opens the
presntation as read-only. You can't do anything but look at it. The fix
involves resaving the presentation w/o embedded fonts, for which you'll need an
older version of PPT. You'll want to keep a few computers with 2000 installed,
just to be safe.

- There are some other problems that prevent PPT2003 from opening files
sometimes, including those it's created itself. There's an update to fix this,
so the first thing you'll want to do after installing is Help, Check for Updates
and install any available critical updates.

Echo, Jathy and Steve, thank-you all for your feedback.

I don't recommend you upgrade to Office 2003 until Microsoft figures out the
printing issues. When you print to a post script device (or even to the adobe
distiller if you use that program) that is not new enough to be certified to work
with Office 2003 (our colour machine is only 2 years old, and we use Adobe 6.0)
quite often, images print in multiples.

I'd be interested in seeing a one or two-slide presentation that consistently
reproduces this, if you have one that isn't proprietary.

If so, shoot me an email at steve atsign pptools dot com
