Hi,

I am planning to replace my hard disk to a new, larger one.
Certainly I would like to have my current workin XP to be moved to the new
hard disk. I wonder if there is any way to do it without doing a fresh
install on the new disk ? Something like full copy of each file, but as I
remember some windows specific files cannot be simply copied (registry, I
guess) and also the problem may occur when trying to copy files currently in
use...
Is there any step-by-step guide or any similar how-to document available for
such operation? Any suggestions please?

Usually hd manu have a utility on their site to do just this.
Follow usage instructions.
NB If you have MS Office installed this method may cause problems, in which
case a specific third party tool, eg Ghost, True Image would do it

Google "clone cloning hard drive" or "Anna treatise".
And congratulate yourself for asking the most common
question in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.* newsgroups.

Mfg copy utlity 99.99% fail with xp,they work with older windows OS.For
xp,the
software is already installed on youre xp OS.Simply set the new hd as slave
on
the same IDE cable as C: Format the new hd in xp,once thru,go to run, type:
XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS window, once its thru,C:
is now on the new hd and is bootable....Also,D: being the new hd,if asigned
diffrent letter, then use that letter instead...Always works in xp,except
with SATA

I would try IMAGEX - an image tool from MS WAIK. You can make an image from
old C: and restore it on the new hardware. To expand the partition use
DISKPART.
