MIGRATING *.PST FILES FROM OUTLOOK 2000 TO OUTLOOK 2003

I am setting up a new PC with Office 2003 under WinXP. My old PC runs Office
2000 also under WinXP with SP2. I have migrated my Outlook 2000 *.pst files
(Outlook and Archive) to c:\documents and settings\<user>\local
settings\application data\microsoft\outlook. I have tried both
"file>open>outlook data file " and importing the *pst file. In both cases I
get a message that "the file (*.pst) is not a personal folders file".

I set up a new profile after installation as advised by Help and Support
and Outlook is working OK in all other respects. I have successfully
migrated my calendar, tasks and contacts by exporting and importing them as
*.csv files, but I badly need access to my recent and archived e-mails. It
would also be helpful to be able to migrate Rules which are presumably in the
Outlook file.

Very grateful for any assistance.

Russ,

Tx for response. I've already visited that help file and have complied with
it - in fact just read it through again to be sure!

Russ,

I have carefully been through the process yet again per the referenced help
file - I still get the same message for the Outlook data file ie that it is
"not a personal folders file". However Outlook 2003 now opens the archive.pst
file which I migrated at the same time and by the same process. I can't see
any difference in the properties of the 2 files. I have also tried renaming
Outlook.pst but that makes no difference.

So my recent data may be intact in Outlook.pst but I can't access it.

Grateful for any further help you can give.

Russ,

I copied the archive and outlook *.pst files to a CD-RW and transferred
that to the new PC. I've also tried the Windows "files and settings transfer
wizard" via an ethernet link between the 2 PC's. This transferred all my
other data files OK and placed outlook.pst and archive.pst in the correct
folder .

Russ,

I've cracked it! I reverted to a transfer by my ethernet conection using the
files and transfer wizard. and this time the transferred files were
succesfully read by OL2003. The only thing I can think of is that on my old
PC the *.pst files were held under "default user". On the new PC the initial
setup of OL had placed the *.pst files under my personal user id. This time
I allowed the files to transfer to a new default user folder in
"documentsand settings" and OL read them from there.

I received your suggestion just after this little success. I have checked
the file attributions of the transferred files on both machines and both are
set to archive and not read-only. I also checked the "unreadable" files
transferred by CD which I have now deleted and these were also attributed as
archive files not read-only.

Anyway thanks for your support. Hopefully this little saga will help other
users avoid my problem.

Regards

Any file you put on a CD becomes read only, even if you move it back to
a hard drive. Unless you expressly went in and changed that attribute,
Outlook would fail to open it with the very error message you received.
