Migrating objects to a new domain

Hello

We're trying to migrate all users and computers to a new domain.
The situation is:
- local domain fri.uni-lj.si (running on Win2k) which is a child domain of
a master domain uni-lj.si

The plan is to create a new forest with the same domain name (fri.uni-lj.si)
on a new Win2k3 server, having the
same objects in AD as the old server, so that the new domain will no longer
depend from master (uni-lj.si) domain.
Can this be done if we:
- configure a new Win2k3 server
- configure AD with a new domain name like ''test''
- use AD migration tool to migrate all objects to a new domain
- shut down the old server
As far as I know, we can than reconfigure all computers to a new domain
''test''

But is it possible to have the same domain name like the old one (so we
don't need to change anything on computers) ?
I'm thinking if this can be done:
- rename a computer and domain name on a new server to have the same name
like the old one (fri.uni-lj.si).
(is this possible - if yes, how?)

How will result this to users and computers? Will they be able to log-in??
If not, have can this be done - if it is possible?

Thank you all in advance for help

Best regards
Miha

Probably not. It is very difficult (impossible with Win2000)
to rename a domain and you cannot migrate from a domain to
a domain of the same name.

BTW, the answer to you problem is to UPGRADE

(not migrate.)

Thank you all for help. So if I understood right your last ''sentence'' can
we just:
- install a new server (win2003) and configure AD
- then use ADMT to migrate all users, computer accounts, etc ...
- shut down the old server
and we're done, having a new computer with a new NetBIOS domain name, and a
new DNS domain name hosting same objects like the old one.

You mentioned that if we migrate the computer accounts then we won't have to
reconfigure the workstations??
We only need to restart the workstations and they will log into a new
domain?? What happens with the old domain? Does it disappear automatically??
cause we don't need it anymore :)

Thank you again for help

Best regards
Miha

Upgrading won't move him into a new forest.

It was possible to rename a domain in Windows 2000, it just wasn't pretty.
Renaming a domain in Windows 2003 is a lot easier, but still not a process
I'd recommend going through unless you absolutely had to.
The question is an interesting one. It isn't possible to install a new
domain with the same NetBIOS domain name on the same network, but it might
be possible to install one with a different NetBIOS domain name, but the
same DNS domain name. Haven't tried it, but it just might work. Is there
some reason that you can't use a different domain name?
Oh, and when you setup the new domain and migrate the objects, if you
migrate the computer accounts then you won't have to reconfigure the
workstations to log into the new domain, that will happen automagically when
you use the tool.

Of course it won't, and that is of course the POINT.

If he doesn't move to a new forest he won't have
these problems.

After you migrate the computer accouints, then you would want to run the
Security translation wizard. This will ensure the users still have their
desktops and can log onto the new domain. Make sure any file and print
servers you have are also migrated over as well. You can co-exit the old and
the new domain if there are still resources that need to be accessed that
may not be an easy task to move, such as an SQL database. If that;s the
case, choose to keep the SID HIstory. This way the users on the new domain
can still access the resources on the old domain.

Keep the old system up and running for awhile just in case until you are
sure you can unplug it.
