Migrating from windows Mail to Outlook

I want to migrate from Windows Mail to Outlook however when I did this
previously I lost all my e-mails from the old system - should the messages
received using Windows Mail be automatically transferred to the new OL system?

No. In Windows mail do File-Export-Messages and choose Microsoft Exchange.
 
Generally you configure Outlook, then in WM export msgs
And in Outlook Import addresses
(Outlook has to be configured on the same PC as WM)
