I installed Office 2007 on Windows and then restored the .pst form a
backup done under XP.
How do I prevent Outlook from downloading all the emails again from my
ISPs? Is there a registry setting that needs to be changed? I still
have the XP installation so I can find the setting there if I know
what to look for.

Cheers,
Martin

There is no way to prevent it without accessing the server directly.
Log into your mailbox using your mail service's web interface.  Create a
new folder and move everything you don't want to receive again out of
the Inbox and into the new folder.  If it's not in the Inbox on the
server, Outlook can't see it and won't download it.

Alternatively, you can create a new PST on the client PC, make it the
delivery location (the default data file), allow Outlook to download
everything to it, then switch the default data file back to the
original, removing the new PST from the profile, since you don't need
it.

I'd use the first method were I faced with this, but if you elect to
use the second method, make sure you configure the account to leave
messages on the server before starting Outlook for the first time if you
wish to preserve the messages on the server.

Many thanks Brian. Method 1 sounds like the best alternative as one of
my accounts has 9,000+ messages.

Martin

And how did you restore the pst?

Thanks for you offer of help.
I used a standard backup program - Genie Backup Manager Pro 8.

The reply from Brian Tillman seems like the way to go.
