We have an Windows 2000 AD network on an aging server. We bought a
new[er] server to replace it with. I will need to migrate the Active
Directory and all the settings to the new serrver. Is there a protocol
for this?

Where can I get more information on this type of system migration?

Fran

The best way may be to dcpromo the new server to another domain controller on the
domain while the other dc is still up. Be sure to point the new server to the old
server as it's preferred dns server in tcp/ip before you do such. Active Directory
will replicate during the process including Group and Domain/Domain Controller
Security Policy though Local Security Policy will be default installation..

If you want to decommission the old domain controller [though it is good to have at
least two], then first make the new dc a global catalog server in AD Sites and
Services, point it to itself as it's dns preferred dns server, reconfigure the other
computers to point to it as their dns server [and wins server if used] hopefully via
dhcp scope a few days ahead of time if possible, and then dcpromo the old domain
controller [don't just shut it down] which will also transfer all the fsmo roles over
to the new domain controller. --- Steve

Thanks, both of you, for your help.
This seems easy enough. Of course I'll make a FULL backup before I
start all this!

Steven brought up one very important point I missed - be sure you migrate
the Global Catalog as well as the five FSMO roles. Good luck!

The easiest way to do the is just demote the old one to a member server. The
process will transfer all those automtically except for the GC which is easy
enough to do manually. If they want to keep the old one around, then then
promote it back to a dc later.
