Hi,

I have had to migrate an existing file server to a 2003 box and am having a
couple of problems with sharing.

The regkey has been imported OK.

On the old server I had 1 drive (d:\) which stored all the data. Moving
onto the new server I have moved to having 2 drives e: & d: On the d: all
the personnal network drives are stored (the permissions on these are OK), on
the e: all the shared data has been stored & on here none of the permissions
seam to work, the security is on the folders but I can access them from users
who do not have the permissions to view these drives.

Is there anything I need to do to get the permissions working?

Thanks,
Jo

Permissions work by default. If you are not seeing the expected and desired
results, I would suggest to go into the permissions of a user or folder,
click on Avanced, then click on the Effective permissions tab, and choose a
user and determine what permissions that user is actually getting.

Keep in mind this is for NTFS permissions and not Share permissions. By
default, Share permissions on 2003 are set to Everyone READ only. I would
suggest to delete that, and add Authenticated Users: Change, and
Administrators:Full COntrol.

Accessing it from the network, the effective permissions are combined
between NTFS and Share permissions. If there is a match, the MR (most
restrictive) persmissions is what you get. THis way with Auth Users Change,
and the NTFS perms for say, User1 is Read on a folder, then the effective
for User1 across the network is Read. That was why I mentioned to go into
effective tab to determine it;'s NTFS permissions. If you setup the Share
the way I mentioned, the NTFS effective perms will always be the resulting
permissions the user account will get.
