Migrate from 4.0 to 2000

Are there any nifty migration tools that will aid the
following project in a significant manner:

Two NT 4.0 servers, one server used for authentication
and file and printer sharing. The other is used for file
sharing and hosting MAS200.

I would like to migrate both of these servers onto a
single 2000 box. I don't suppose there is a tool that
will move users, permissions, shares and even files? A
tool that will allow me to sit around, drinking filtered
water, playing Spades while it does all the work?

Thanks

Andrew

Not a single tool I think will do the job but a
combination of tools might work. Assuming the W2k box is
running Active Directory, the Active Directory Migration
Tool (ADMT) tool will help in migrating users, privileges,
and group memberships. Robocopy will aid in moving files
and folders and keep exising permissions. However, I'm not
certain if ACL's will be maintained on the new machine as
I have never tried consolidating machines before. Hope
this helps.

That tool is called a consultant.

Hello ANdrew!!

Here is the answer. I do this for a living.

If you haven't already, purchase a new server with no
Operating system on it. Install it as a NT4.0 BDC in the
existing NT4.0 domain. All users, groups, permissions
will transfer to new BDC. Promote new BDC to PDC and do
an in place upgrade on the new server.

This method will accomplish the following:

You will upgrade to 2000 seamlessly, users are not
effected in any way. Make sure your client machines have
the new ip address of this server which should have DNS
on it.

SHould something fail (it won't). You can promote the
older BDC back to a PDC and start over without effecting
your environment.

Good Luck

Mendel,

Your way will work except he wont be able to sip filtered water and play
spades while this happens. He will actually have to put down the cards and
water and "touch" a computer ;-)
