Migrate app under Vista advise ???

Dear all,

We have one product runing under windows 2000 . This product is based on
different VB5 executable accessing local access database.
In addition we there are able to send data over network using socket with TCP.

MOving to vista is one of our preoccupation.
In order to limit the developepement upgrade time or redo all things,
accrording to you :

Does VB5 executable running under 2000 will continue to work ?
Does old style DAO- ADO - ODBC is still supported or need to be changed ?

Mostly yes, but depends on you app.
If u are not harnessed into some kind of security/systems plays, because
security features were changes a bit
along with systems (for example services can't interact with desktop, no
ui in the winsta0 and etc)

nope, it works fine

the best approach is to install vista (beta2 is free) and report us about
your porting

Of course I will have to installe the beta version and then my alla
pallication on top of it and see how it goes...

By the way, did you manage to installed the Vista beta2 on Microsoft Virtual
PC 2004 ? I have tryed but it is etremly slow and I have a brand new PC for a
bout 3 month now.

3.5 GHZ
1GB ram
400Gb hard disk

Nope. I didn't try run vista under vpc. try to ask guys from vista newsgroup
BTW, 1GB RAM is not enough for this, vista need only 1gb to seems to be working
withount delaying

I've installed the beta in VMWare on a P4 2Ghz with only 512MB RAM. I
have to assign at least 350MB to the virtual machine, but then it works
fine. Granted, it isn't fast, but it's not extremely slow either.

VMWare is free nowadays.
 
BTW Microsoft Virtual PC is also free now.
