Anyone know of freeware that can do this conversion. I find only WAVE to
MIDI converters :P

Thanks, but I can't find any freeware there that does the job without
needing to add instrument-files (which aren't freeware, it seems). I
may be wrong or just plain tired, though.

AFAIK the only free, and easliy the best, is timidity,

It has that hem, interesting unfinished feel of much this sort of
software, but I've managed to make it work so you can, and there is now
much more help.

There are free soundfonts of sizes to cover all your needs, and it will
embarass the hell out of your cheapo soundcard.

http://earth.prohosting.com/~saxguru/

http://www.stardate.bc.ca/eawpatches/html/default.htm

are a couple of good pages to start.

Incidentally, if you know of any good wav to midi comnverters ( a trick I
thought was virtually impossible), I'd be very glad to hear of them,

You need the instrument files, because they actually create the sounds
for the MIDI files. But there is a freeware collection of instruments
available.

I use timidity++, there were a link from the programs homepage to such a
library that is necessary for this program. All in all a ~ 30 MB
download, but worth the price.

Thank you both. With a little patience Timidity worked perfectly. With the
right soundfont the result is excellent quality.

"Amazing Midi" seems to do the job when it comes to converting from wave to
midi:
URL:http://www.pluto.dti.ne.jp/~araki/amazingmidi/ (freeware)

I found others as well, but most were not freeware, and as I was looking for
midi-to-wav conversions I quickly deleted the programs and links to software
that didn't do what I wanted. Sorry. I found them all by googling for "wave
to midi convert", though.

Thank you Rolf, I tried it, I probably ommitted to mention that I wanted to
put a Cd of Beethovens 5th in the tray and print out a score!

I don't really think what I want is possible, the equivalent of turning a
cake back into a recipe; but I thought you'd found something from your ost

Hi Mike !

Try an other way.
Search the web for a midi-file of the "5th"
Put this midi-file into MidiNotate and print out the tunes.
Version 1.3.1 was freeware.
But of course, there are similar programs.
Have a look at a ....midi.... group or FAQ.

Reinhard

That's more or less what I do, Reinhard, but I don't print them, I make
CD's after kicking them around the floor quite a lot; it's for choir
members to help them learn their notes.

But usually only classics are freely available, and I can't play a piano
to make a midi file from scores, so an awful lot of music is unavailable
to me.

But a prog that could magically give me a multitrack midi from a
recording...that would be something

Reinhard, if you know where that freeware version can still be found, I for
one would be very grateful!

Hi Mike !

My english is bad and maybe I misundertood.

But I think you are searching for a "Wave2Mid" - converter.
I knew 2 of them.
But the result isn't useful.

If you hear music do you really know how many insstruments are playing ?
No SW can distinguish between many instruments.

But try it :
Here is a copy out of my "answer-book" :

Digital Ear from Epinoisis Software, is a
new revolutionary software that can
analyze a recorded solo performance (e.g.
a singing human voice, a saxophone solo,
or other instrument) and convert it into a
standard MIDI file. That file can be sent
directly to any synthesizer, or can be
imported to your favorite sequencer (e.g.
Cubase VST, Cakewalk etc. ) for mixing
with other tracks, or further processing.

Unlike other software, Digital Ear will send high-resolution pitch-bend
events closely
matching those of your original sound. Any vibrato, tremolo, pitch-bend, or
portamento
effects of your recorded sound will be faithfully converted and reproduced
into any voice of
your synthesizer. A unique capability of Digital Ear not found elsewhere,
is that it can
capture and send to your MIDI synthesizer, detailed envelope (EG) and
timbre dynamics
events. Those features can boost your synthesizer's voice realism and
enhance your
musical expression. Think of Digital Ear as your ultimate MIDI controller!
Digital Ear is
recommended by Yamaha corp. and has received excellent reviews from Future
Music
Magazine, Audio Buyer's Guide, ZDNet, Sonic Spot and others.

For more information please visit Epinoisis Software's site at:

or email Epinoisis Software at (e-mail address removed)

We're giving away one copy this week!

Winning is easy. All you have to do is answer the simple question below.
The first correct

The more
times you enter, the great chances you have of winning.

BUT :
Maybe you should try "ABC2MIDI" :
This software converts written tunes like "a b c d e f g" into MIDI.
And there is a converter MIDI 2 ABC and MIDI 2 PS (postscript for
printing)

After editing with notepad, you start the dos-box :
abc2midi.exe jubilate.abc
and you will get

Yes, that's right, Reinhard, and your English is not bad.

Sometimes I think that an effective wav to mid convertor might have come
along since I last looked; but I really don't believe it is possible.

But the number of things that I have thought were not possible, and they
have happened, always makes me wonder if this time it may have happened.

Looks good. :)

The site says that "the GUI version does NOT work with NT and possibly
XP".

Before I download the whole bunch: my OS is XP (Pro). Does anyone already
tried if it works under XP? I've listened to some samples and they realy
sounds great! :)

I have Win XP home and timidity++ works without any problems.

Aha. I've tried it anyway, but I must say, the DOS console is very
convenient also (I have no problems with command line).

Amazing program! Sounds excellent. :)

Unless something's changed radically since I tried it, it comes with onle
a few samples and very few instruments.

You have to buy their patches to do anything in real life.

Timidity is the real thing
