Midi files won't play

Hi,

All my sounds will play with the exception of midi files. Whether on the
computer or the internet.
Nothing is muted in the volume control

Open Control Panel|SOUNDS|AUDIO tab|MIDI section

Note what is listed in the box, then click the arrow to the right of the
box, and choose something else. Try 'em all. If no joy, reinstate the
original choice.

I keep trying this but I can't save my settings when i click 'Apply'

The MIDI field keeps returning to a blank box when i re-open control
panel-audio tab to check.
I've tried both checking and unchecking the 'use only default devices ' box,
but the same thing keeps happening.
Why isn't my midi setting saved?
