MIDI editor?

I'd like to edit some midi files. Nothing fancy,
just cut and paste. I'd like to snip off the first
x seconds, and keep the rest of the files.

Any recommendations?

I'm pretty sure you need to use a MIDI sequencer to do this; you can't
edit a MIDI file in the same way in which you would edit an audio file.
A couple of freeware MIDI sequencing programs are JAZZ++, available at
http://www.jazzware.com , and Anvil Studio, from
http://www.anvilstudio.com .

Thanks, Joe. Any opinions on these from anyone?

I believe both these progs (it's some time since I looked) are very limited
in the number of tracks available - I theeenk two.

That may be enough for you.

If I'm wrong and either will do a number of tracks, say 8, I hope someone
will let us know.

As far as I remember they're not limited from the point of view of the
number of tracks...
I think they support at least 16 tracks.

Here's another suggestion, albeit one that some readers won't approve
of: There's a free version of ProTools available at
http://www.digidesign.com, that supports 8 tracks of digital audio and
48 tracks of MIDI. Unfortunately, it only works on Windows 98 and ME.
Users of Windows 200 or XP, or other operating systems, are out of luck.
If you don't mind a crippled version of a commercial product, this could
suit your needs.

When I tried them, it was the paid version that could do that.

I'm still struggling with an ancient Cakewalk Express, which is pretty
hoeless for staff entry, and Noteworthy, which cripples midi, so I need the
C/W express to repair the files
