Hello all.

I am unable to play files with .mid extensions. Here is what happened.
I received one as an email attachment. After playing it perhaps a
dozen times (it's a tune I really like) it wouldn't play anymore using
both Windows Media Player v10 and Irfanview. Actually they do play as
seen on the progress indicators but there is no sound. I had the file
sent to me again and after a few days the sound quit. Both players
play other media files. I rooted around c:\ for some more .mid files
and found a few and they don't play either. Really weird!!!

Any suggestions?

Glenn

Try re-booting. If no joy, and you are running WinXP or WinME, do a restore.
If an older version of Win9X, un-install Media Player and re-install.

I had that symptom for a while, exactly as you describe. My cause was
result of my having deleted mmtask.tsk from my sysdir. Restored a backup
and the functionality returned. Just a mention in case your cause is
related. Also: I note that if I kill mmtaks.tsk from my process list,
then it's no sound from .mid. I don't know how you'd call it up for
reload. Other than simply reboot...

Right after I posted the message I tried it again and the .mid files
play OK. Crazy!

Have you used the sound card for anything else in between? I've known progs
be unable to get the soundcard back when another is in use, ie a midi
program and a wav open at the same time

First thing to check in situations like yours is whether the sound has been
muted. Sometimes this can happen accidentally.

Thanks for all the tips. It seems that MIDI was muted in either
Playback or Record or perhaps both. Why it would sometimes play I
don't know. Or maybe it was something else which somehow corrected
itself.

I must confess I don't understand the Playback and Record terms as
used here. For instance, to show Microphone for both doesn't make
sense to me. Line-Out is control is not available. It would be much
appreciated if someone would point me to a detailed description of how
these panels function.

Typically you'd want the microphone to operate as a recording source
without actually playing through your speakers while you talk. If you
have the microphone unmuted in both Playback and Record, you may get
horrible feedback. :-)

If you have a line-out jack on your sound card, you should be able to add
Line Out to the mixer display. While you're in the mixer, click Options,
choose Properties, and look at the "Show the following volume controls"
section. If Line Out is in the list but not checked off, check the box
for it and hit OK. Do this with "Adjust volume for: Playback" selected
then again with "Adjust volume for: Recording" selected. That should do
the trick.

Agreed. If I use headphones (speakers OFF) I can hear myself talk, I
can't imagine ever wanting to do this though. :-)

Sure makes sense to me. As it happens, both Playback and Recording
show Line In but not Line Out. My Sound Blaster AWE64 does includes
Line Out. Oh well, not a big deal.

Thanks Janice.

Come to think of it, Line Out is only an output jack, usually used for
connecting powered speakers, so that's why it's not an option under
Recording -- there's no input from it to record. As for Playback, the
master Play Control on the far left will control the Line Out output.
Sorry about that; somehow I had Line In functionality on my mind even
though you were asking about Line Out. :-)
