I want to keep Outlook running in the background so that
I'm advised immediately of incoming e-mail and calendar
reminders.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

Did you have a question? You can certainly do as you suggest, and
it doesn't require any special techniques or anything like that.

Try...

Tools -> Options
Mail Setup tab
Send/Recieve Button
Highlight "All Accounts" under "Group Name"
Then down the bottom under "settings for group "All Acounts""...
Put ticks next to

"When Outlook if Online
Schedule an automatic send/recieve every... etc"

and/or

When Outlook is Offline
Schedule an automatic send/recieve every... etc"

Set the time as you want.

This will cause Outlook to check the server for email every x mins (but be
aware that if you are on phone line that is charged per second or per call
you will be making more calls).

You may also need to set up the dial up settings on Tools -> options -> Mail
setup

I'm not sure how you set up the calandar.
