Microsoft's Vista to Include Tighter Transfer Restrictions

It may be months before Windows Vista, the long-anticipated upgrade of
Microsoft's PC operating platform, becomes widely available, but the company
is already taking heat for building in technology that limits its
transferability. Users will be able to transfer Vista from the first PC
installation to a different machine only once. Earlier versions of the
operating system, including Windows XP, gave users more freedom to transfer
their preloaded software to other machines once the original PC was no
longer in use.

FYI, this has not yet been finalized.

I hope not, although more than one news outlet has reported it.
This company is flat unethical and a (near) monopoly.
Gates earns a lot of money, but I don't see how he gets any job
satisfaction.

The key word in that article is "preloaded". This means that the system came from the manufacturer with an OEM version of Windows already loaded on the computer. Preloaded OEM versions have always been tied to the machine they are installed on and cannot be moved to another machine, even one time. Whoever wrote this article did not do their homework.

A couple of questions:

1) Who decides what is or is not "ethical"
YOU? As far as I know, you only have the right to decide what is or
is not ethical for YOURSELF.

2) Monopolies, per se, are NOT illegal, or unethical.
Again, who decides which monopolies are acceptable, and which ones are
not?

Again, I ask, are YOU the one who makes this decision? My answer, is,
of course, "NO. The American People, through their elected
representatives, make this decision." But NO SINGLE person makes
this decision. If this were so, YOU would be the absolute ruler of
the United States. Monopolies are legal in almost EVERY society on
the fact of the earth.

In addition, the most recent word from Microsoft is that they have
listened to the voices of their customers, and have decided that
Retail versions may CONTINUE to be transferred to as many machines as
is necessary, as long as the OS is only activated on one machine at a
time. It will probably necessitate a telephone activation, however.

I can live with that.

What I don't like is the exclusion of a Generic OEM edition of Vista
from Microsoft's offerings.

However, I doubt that I will need Vista Ultimate. From what I have
read, Vista Home Premium will be more than sufficient for me. Since
I have a previous Full qualifying version of Windows, I will be able
to purchase a Retail Upgrade edition of VHP for $159, which is only a
few dollars more than a Full OEM edition of XP Pro w/SP2 cost, and
will be within my financial capabilities.

In a way, this will be better than a Full OEM Edition of the full
Professional product, since I will be able to transfer my license to a
second, third, or on and on computer, if I should need to further down
the line without having to purchase an OEM license with each new
computer I put together.

So really, Microsoft has not "raised prices" unreasonably with Vista
for the Home builder or other hobbyists.

And we will get Media Center to boot for our $159.

So I am not as unhappy as I once thought.

Hurry up, January 30. I can't wait for the General Release of Vista..

I plan on putting it on my Apple Intel PC as the ONLY OS, and get rid
of that piece of crap OS X forever.
