Microsoft's memory diagnostic - how good?

How well does it compare to other freeware or shareware diagnostics,
like MemTest86 (www.memtest86.com) and Gold Memory
(www.goldmemory.cz)? It's downloadable from
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Microsoft says that some of its tests are tailored to the particular
memory chips, and the program file lists several brands of memory but
doesn't display those brands when the program is run.

MemTest86 and Gold Memory were reviewed here:
www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?ArticleID=RWT052001232443
and here: www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?ArticleID=RWT120901222920

I've found that these two detect errors better than other free
diagnostics do, especially DocMem (www.simmtester.com), but I no
longer have my defective memory modules, so I can't compare them to
Microsoft's diagnostic and MemTest+.

the only thing a 'tech' should use is a 'hardware' tester

I once bought some memory that consistently failed MemTest86 after a
few hours, but the store's hardware tester found nothing wrong with
it, and I've read that some hardware testers are as bad as DocMem
(www.simmtester.com), a program that's passed many of my modules that
MemTest86 and Gold Memory have failed.

But I've had memory pass MemTest86 and fail Gold Memory, and
vice-versa in one case, so I wouldn't mind a diagnostic that can find
errors that they can't.
