Hi all,

Can anyone else connect to Microsoft's ftp server?

I just keep getting "Connection closed by remote host."

Anyone know what's going on?

Thanks,

Bill

I can now but not always. Sometimes my dynamic IP appears banned.

Connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
220 Microsoft FTP Service
331 Anonymous access allowed, send identity (e-mail name) as password.
230-This is FTP.Microsoft.Com
230 Anonymous user logged in.

Microsoft's FTP site periodically goes down. There is nothing extra special you have to do. If you cannot connect to it it is just down. When I say down I do not mean broken. Sometimes it changes to a secure site requiring username and password. They'll fix it in a few days.

You can always try the ftp in the command prompt. Go to the command prompt and type ftp Then type help

He is connecting, then he gets bumped. Microsoft for some reason is blocking
at least some Verizon IPs., perhaps other ISP IPs too.

Maybe. But I really think the issue will go away in a few days. The trouble I've had with it in the past has always cleared up in a week or so.

Perhaps this is so, but I am not able to connect at home or at work (two
different ISPs).

Intermittently on Tuesday 20 Jul 2004, I was able to get to a logon prompt,
but it did not allow an anonymous logon.

Maybe they are working on the problem...

I have Microsoft's FTP site in my Network connections so that I can access their site from Windows Explorer. Let's see if it works...yeah it worked but their setup is wrong. Try this:

Go to double-click My Network Places on the desktop. Then Add Network Place. You will use:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com

Now the Microsoft FTP site should appear in Windows Explorer under My Network Places. Select the folder. You should get on the right the folders listed. You should be able to click the + by the name but that is where their configuration is messed up. That is not working. You will need to double-click on the right to drill down through the folders.

Hi George,

Thanks for trying to be helpful, but "Connection closed by remote host"
means (usually) one of two things: It's refusing the connection (disallowed
IP addresses?), or it's dropping it (not listening on TCP port 21?). No
amount of mucking about in a GUI interface is going to fix that.

It's still down, by the way...

Bill

It's been up and down for at least a year, and it may block a subdir but allow access to the parent (and then change dir back to dir that refused me) and all sorts of wierd stuff.

I got that message when I clicked on the "+." That's why I said double-click the folders on the right. If that is no joy sorry stumped. I cannot replicate it here.
