I supose im putting my hands up again and asking for help my self. I
installed Freelancer and have loss of some sound, mosly charater
voices and chatter, thoughs lovly people at microsoft showed me this
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814549#XSLTH3120121122120121120120 , i
tried every last thing on that page, and nothing strangly inof i did
not have the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec installed in the first
place and as such would not install. I guess i shouldnt be supprised
since this is a microsoft product for there operating system, the only
operating system you can play it on, and then it dosnt even work
properly, and on top of that this is the only game i have ever had
that dosnt work properly, Any help is apriciated, but i have tried
every thing i can think of, plus what microsoft said.

I'm going to assume that means you didn't have it installed, and it would
not install? Well what happens when you try and install it?

Could always play Elite on the BBC, or the dozens of other platforms it was
released for.

Wow! This brings back memories.. it's been years since this issue first
started being posted, and usually it was causing Mission 3 to fail.

Here's the solution from the past, and surprisingly the tinyurl still works!

If changing the sound codices and sound settings doesn't resolve the
problem, you'll have to fly into the hulls of those 3 ships until they are
dead. Firing on them will cause you to lose the mission. Fun huh? ;-)

Copying the FL Codec to your FL directory helps solve that problem:

1. To download the l3codecp.acm codec click: http://tinyurl.com/7nta
or copy the l3codeca.acm codec from your windows system32 folder
to the Freelancer\EXE folder in step 2, and rename it to l3codecp.acm.

2. Save the codec to your Freelancer EXE directory. The path is:
Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE

3. Reboot

If you still have problems visit: http://tinyurl.com/76tf
or increase the Codec's Priority to 1 here's how:

a) Go into Control Panel / Sounds / Hardware Tab
b) Select Audio Codec from the list / click the Properties button
c) Click the Properties Tab / double-click Fraunhofer IIS Codec
d) Change priority to 1 / Click "Use this audio Codec"
e) Click Apply / Click OK to close all open windows and finish.

There are more sound tips in the readme.rtf file on your Freelancer CD.
That's all there is to it. Post back and let us know how that worked. :-)

When I said it would not install, I ment exacly that when ever i
floowed the insturctions on here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814549#XSLTH3120121122120121120120 to
install it, it wouldnt, i would guess this is due to my having the ace
mega codec pack installed, but im not uninstalling that for the sake
one 1 game.

Ouch. I wouldn't touch those codec packs with a barge pole, last time I did
it ended up being impossible to track down the problems (as they install so
much useless rubbish) so I ended up just formatting, and only ever
installing what I really needed when it came to video codecs.

"I wouldn’t touch those codec packs with a barge pole"
How can you, there not physical objects...

If you know what your doing (like me) the codek packs can be one of
thje best things you can have, because it was properly instaled by me,
it means any media player i want to use can play any format of video,
thats right, if i wanted to i can watch quick time video in wmp.
