microsoft works

i recently upgraded to windows xp and was wondering if microsoft works was
included with the upgrade. i have an option under the start | all programs |
microsoft works, but it states program not installed. i also have the
microsoft word option, but also states not installed. i really need this for
school and now i am not sure what to do. any suggestions would be greatly be
appreciated. thanks.

Microsoft Works is not included in any version
of the Windows XP "operating system".

Purchase and install Microsoft Works.

No. Neither Windows XP nor any other version of Windows has ever
come with Works, Word, nor with any other significant application
software.

Did you do an upgrade from a previous operating system (in which
case, your applications should have remained in place) or did you
do a clean installation? If the latter, you need to reinstall
them from the original media if you have them, or else buy new
copies.

There are free word processors available for download over the
internet. The best is Open Office. Why not download and install
Open Office, to try it out, before paying money for Works or MS
Office?

You'd probably want the latest stable release version 1.1.4.

$120-150 at most office supply stores and perhaps even a
little less at your college bookstore.
There are free office applications, but you may be happier
with something your school/teacher also have since any work
you hand-in must be able to be opened.

Open Office saves in Microsoft Word ".doc" format. Might not do a
perfect job on really complex files with dozens of pics and boxes,
but should do well enough on simple school papers.

course. So check first.

Also, if student Office is not available, note that Works *Suite*
includes Word as word processor; this may be the cheapest non-student
