Everytime I click the icon on my desktop, a document with
text appears instead of the usual blank document. The
document with text is one ofmy files and I unable to
remove it from the screen everytime I run Microsoft
Word. Please help me, since I cannot start a new
document.
Thanks

Greetings --

You've somehow managed to over-write Word's Normal.DOT template
with one of your own documents. Click Start > Search and do a search
for "Normal.dot." When you find the copy of the template that's
stored within your user profile, rename it to something like
"myfile.doc." The next time you open Word, a new template (that
stores your default margins and paragraph formats) will be created.

There are macro viruses that can cause this to happen. Do you
have a decent antivirus application installed, and do you keep its
definition files up-to-date?

This group deals with issues arising from the Windows XP operating system
only, and not the applications installed upon it, you should post this to a
Word group. However, as I know the answer, I will assist you this once,
however please post to the relevant group in future. You may be running it
under Windows XP, but you need to post to a group relevant to the
application, not the operating system.

You need to search for a file called 'normal.dot' (you will need to enable
'search hidden files and folders') and delete it. The next time you start
Word it will automatically recreate the file. Somehow this document has been
saved as the normal template (which is the template that saves your settings
for use each time you start Word) and deleting it will give you a fresh
start - however you will lose any other customisations you've made.
