When I try to open Word to type a document, I get a box
saying that it is "preparing to install," then a box saying
it is "configuring," then a message that says "Error 1402.
Could not open key." I regularly install updates and have
run a virus scan, but the problem still occurs. Any ideas?

Try a Repair Installation of Microsoft Word. You will need the original
Microsoft Word (or Office) CD.

Cari,

Thanks for your response. Before I got your reply, I
decided to shut down my computer and re-boot. I shut down
completely, left it off for a few minutes and started back
up. I can now access Microsoft Word. However, I'd still
like to know what caused the error to begin with. Anyone
have any ideas?

Cari,

Actually I went to this article before any of my postings
here. But the article states specifically that the
information is NOT for Windows XP, or maybe I'm
misinterpreting the information. ???

Sometimes the system is just busy and/or doesn't recognize the call.
Rebooting releases memory and anything else that was open at the time which
might have been the source of the issue. It's not always easy to define
what caused such an issue. There may be an indication in the Event Viewer.
Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, go through
the various sections looking for errors that correspond to the time when
this happened. If you find any such errors, double click, the information
contained within may give a clue to the source.
