I have all the Microsoft items, includes Excel, Word, Power point. What
happened was when i came back from Iraq, my girlfriend lost the product code
key that came with this computer, and when i try and start up microsoft word
or any of them it asks for a register user, orgination and a product key to
get it started. Will i need to buy a new windows program or should i contact
compaq company with my computer information? And why won't the product code
for windows listed on the side of the computer work?

Hi Blitzkrieg,

If Excel, Word, Powerpoint came pre-installed on the computer, then you
would have to contact Compaq for assistance.

The product code for Windows that is on the side of the computer won't work
for the above programs because it is for the Windows operating system only,
not for any other programs that Compaq installed.

No. Don't mix up Microsoft Office with Microsoft Windows. If you don't have
Excel, Word, Power point, etc., you might have to buy a new copy of Office,
but not Windows..

If they supplied it, they may be willing to help, but you may also be out of
luck.

Beacuse that's the product key for *Windows*, not that for Office. Windows
and Office are two different products.

How soon after you bought the computer did you leave for Iraq?
The reason I ask is that many manufacturers are including a 60
day trial version of Microsoft Office on their computers. That
may be the case for your Compaq. The trial may have expired
while you were overseas.

I seem to recall reading that after the trial period ends you
can still open documents you created. To create new documents
you have to purchase the full version. Bottom line is that
you're going to have to contact the manufacturer or the store
where you purchased the system to find out exactly which
version, full or trial, was supposed to be on your computer.

Good luck
