I need to attach a document to an e-mail in Microsoft
Word in order for the person I'm sending it to to view
it. I have Windows XP Home Edition, and all my word
processing documents are in WordPerfect. How do I make a
simple Word document? How do I know if I even have Word?

Word can open WordPerfect documents - just send it as it it.

Well, just because you have Windows XP does not mean that you have Microsoft
Word. They are two entirely different programs.

Why don't you know whether or not you have Word? Did you buy Word and then
install it? If so, you should know the answer. Did it come pre-installed
with your computer? If so, you should have documentation to show what you
have.

Hi, Laura.

Microsoft Windows XP is an operating system. WordPerfect and Microsoft Word
are programs that can be run by WinXP. WordPerfect and Word are
competitors, but each can read and use documents created by the other.
Neither program is actually a part of WinXP and would have to be purchased
separately.

Many computer vendors "bundle" one or more programs with their computers to
make them easier to sell. Dell, for example, bundles Microsoft Works Suite
with some of its computers, but only the smaller Works package with others;
the Works Suite includes Microsoft Word, but Works includes only the simpler
Works Work Processor. Other computer makers bundle the WordPerfect Office
suite, including WordPerfect, instead of the Microsoft product. In any
case, your sales literature and owner's manuals should make it clear which
programs came with your computer. If you need other programs, you will have
to buy them separately from the computer.

Do you actually have BOTH Word and WordPerfect?

Which email program are you using? Microsoft Outlook? Outlook Express? Or
some other program? Each program has its own methods for attaching
documents to email messages.

Here in WindowsXP New Users we deal mostly with more "generic" XP questions.
For the best advice on Word, you should try one of the Office or Word
discussion groups.

Save your document in .RTF (rich text format) It will open equally well in
Word and Word Perfect. (pretty much any word processor)

In Word Perfect click File> Save as. Choose RTF from the "file type" drop
down.

No need - Word will open WordPerfect documents.......

Notepad is available in XP for very "basic" word processing. If you want a
more capable word processor, you will need to install Word or some other
word processing software. Word is a separate software suite and has never
been included with any Microsoft operating system. You might want to look
at Open Office, and it's free.

Also, in answer to your question, "...has the program Wordpad replaced
Word?" Worpad is not the same as Word. Wordpad is another "basic" word
processor program which is included with the Windows XP operating system.
Wordpad has more formatting capabilities than Notepad There are space
limitations with both Notepad and Word. For example, you are not going to
be able to write a novel using either program. Wordpad allows the user to
create a document which is larger than Notepad, however.

Wordpad and Notepad are very basic programs. They do not do anything
sophiscated. I would not recommend using them if you wish to create
something which looks "professional". If you need something more
sophisticated, you will need Word. Word is available either by itself, or
it's included in any of the different Office software packages.
