1. check again that you are typing it correctly ... sometimes 0 and O
and l and 1 are mistaken.
2. make sure you have the right key. It wants the one that is normally
on an orange sticker on the back of the cd case. i don't know exactly
where it is on Word 2002 having never seen that cd case.
3. Contact Microsoft
4. return the cd to where you bought and it and tell them the key
doesn't work and get another cd with new key.

I should probably point out that step 3 and 4 should only be done if step 1
and 2 don't work out...but you already knew that.

Also, I think he means don't mistake the 1's for I's and vice versa. And I
will support: the 2002 version has a large rectangular orange sticker on it
with a large picture of a key and the word "Product Key". Don't confuse it
with any other numbers listed anywhere else (ID's, activation numbers ect.).

and it says that's invalid! What's goin on?

The product key for the OS (XP) is usually on the computer. I'm not
aware they put the product key for Works on the computer. Either in
paper work, or on the CD case, or ... as they evidently told you, on the
computer case.

Sugget you go back to the vendor from whom you purchased this and tell
them that the product key doesn't work (Item 4 on original list).
Ensure you specify which product key you want Works or XP. Don't
confuse them.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

You should have received three CDs with Works suite OEM which would
contain the product key. If you didn't receive the disks with your
computer then complain to your supplier.
