I have succesfully installed and am using my wireless
keyboard and mouse from Microsoft. When I tried to use
the F8 key to open Safe Mode the startup software past
over Safe Mode and opened in normal mode. I retried
pressing the alt key but same problem. I seem not to be
getting any responce from any of the funtion keys. I use
XP home OS

XP or not the operating system loads the drivers so the wireless gear
can work. No op system, no mouse or keyboard.

Not the case, with the Logitech setups anyway. I have a Logitech
setup and can use the keyboard all I want before the OS loads. The MS
setups may be different.

Looks like it goes in the USB. Maybe setting the BIOS to support Legacy
USB keyboard would get basic functions working.

They plug into the PS/2 port and are transparent?

Mine will plug into either, but reccomended as a PS/2 for a desktop.

Yes, the transceiver is transparent in my case, it sends the signal as
though typing on a keyboard wired directly to the computer. As in
your other post, yes plugging it in through USB may require enabling
USB keyboard support in the BIOS. My unit has 2 plugs for mouse and
keyboard, only one is used if you use USB, both if PS/2 is used, as I
have it set up.

Cool! Maybe someday I'll go that route.

Hi David,

Does your "wireless keyboard ... from Microsoft" have an F Lock key that allows
"enhanced" operation? If yes, see the following Web Site for information on these
types of keyboards with the F Lock key hardware switch.

F Lock Key Info
By Jason Tsang, Microsoft MVP (Windows Shell/User)
http://www.mvps.org/jtsang/flock.html

I do not have a keyboard with an F Lock key, but the way I understand the
aforementioned page is that the initial state (before Windows loads) of the F Lock
key is in "enhanced" operation. This means that pressing the F8 key is not going to
start Windows in Safe Mode. Furthermore, since it is a hardware switch there does
not appear to be anything you can do to override this function (before Windows
loads).

Once again I do not have a keyboard with an F Lock key, but it seems to me that you
have two options. 1) Plug-in a "regular" keyboard when you want to boot to SafeMode.
2) Edit your boot.ini so that Safe Mode is a Menu Option.

For more information about editing the boot.ini, and Safe-Mode boot switches, see the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles:

And if you have any more question about Microsoft Hardware I suggest that you post in

regarding Windows XP try: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.
