Microsoft Windows XP "Is it all it should be?"

I am currently working on my master's program and am in a
ITM class. I have to do a paper on XP, and since I have
never used it, it makes it very hard to answer.
Therefore, I am asking for your help. My question is...
Has the lack of competition in the operating syspems
market harmed innovation in terms of the development of
Window's operating system? In other words, is XP all it
should be? I would appreciate your opinions. Thanks!

There is loads of information in these news groups and throughout the
internet. Search for it and read it. Why should others do your work for you.
Earn the grade on your own merits.

Greetings --

What "lack of competition?" Have you never heard of Apple and its
various renditions of the MacOS? How about Unix, Linux, OS/2,
FreeBSD, Lindows and many others? I certainly hope your Masters
degree program isn't in the fields of computer science, engineering,
or business.

And why in the world would someone allegedly pursuing a Masters
Degree choose to write a paper on a topic of which he is completely
ignorant? Or, if the topic has been mandated, why would a Masters
candidate refuse to experiment with the subject, and think others
should do his research for him and hand him the paper pre-written,
needing only some consolidation and editing?

Hi,

I fail to see how you could expect to get unbiased feedback in a newsgroup
where persons in general are trying to get solutions to problems that they
have with XP.

Assuming that you get the"pros of XP" from some other source, (businesses
which have used it successfully for instance), the "cons of XP" as drawn
from this or any other newsgroup would be anecdotal at best and far from
scientific in anyone's view.

Inherent to your review ( I think) is, the attempt to quantify the
comparative usefulness/ innovativeness of a product that is so many things
to so many people and by virtue of that alone, your findings would be
empirical at best!

Anotther lazy arse who can't be bothered to do its own research - doesn't
even know how to punctuate or operate a spellchecker either (hint - plurals
are not apostrophised). Maybe you should learn basic English before doing a
Masters you can't even be bothered to study for!

It is totally irrelevant what answers you get, unless you install and use
the OS itself. I cannot believe that someone who is working toward his
Masters and required to write a paper on Windows XP would not install and
use the product in an effort to have at least a limited working knowledge of
ones subject. If you were my student, and I was able to determine that you
did not even install and use the product in question, your paper would not
be accepted. You can dual boot very easily. Of course, all of this would
take a little time and effort on your part, and your post indicates that you
are only interested in taking the easy way out. You have done no research
among the trade journals, have apparently not used the internet to gather
pertinent information, and haven't even installed the OS on a machine so
that you can form your own core opinion.

I wish you luck, but if this is the caliber of Masters students that exist
today, it's no wonder major corporations are looking outside the US for
brainpower.

Hey, a preposition is something you should never end a sentence with! :-)

If Windows XP was all it should be, which would mean satisfying all of
the requirements of every user, then there would be no need to develop
a replacement product for it.

And as Microsoft has already announced that a replacement product for
Windows XP is being developed under the code name of Longhorn it is
readily apparent that Microsoft, at least, thinks that Windows XP is
not quite "all that it should be".
