Does anyone know what scan engine is used by Microsoft Windows OneCare
antivirus?
Is it a Microsoft own engine or is it provided by a third party?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Best regards

It's their own. Maybe based upon RAV's old engine which was purchased by Microsoft 2 or 3
years ago.

As far as I know, it is the same engine used for their online AV scanner -

Right now they are so behind the curve in detection its actually laughable. To add injury
to insult they have a spam filter on their AV submission email address so if you use the
wrong words or HTML embed a graphic it may trigger the spam filter and you'll get a failed
mail message.

Do you think it is good enough for my 6yr old son's XPSP2 pro? That is
the box that I put it on. ;)

I don't get the question. MS AV solutuions are Beta so I won't/don't suggest them.

I think you have aprety good idea of "good" well know AV solutions.
Rule of thumb -- stick to what you know.

It was my poor attempt at humour :(

I have been running it a while now-seems to be written with the novice
in mind.

Oh -- I get it now :-)

Not a humourous night tonight.

I can't believe that Microsoft, with its enormous resources and its
commitment to security, can produce an antivirus that is a piece of
crap.
Is there any comparative test out there that considers Windows OneCare?

Thanks.

It is still a Beta. I don't think you'll see it compared until it is fully completed and
released.

I dunno.

Win98SE could be considered Beta up until about a month before MS
discontinued it.

then you're not a student of history... msav was definitely crap...

Microsoft AntiSpyware would be considered Beta also, but it is very
good, isn't it? Granted that is essentially the same product as
Giant's but could not the same case be made for the anti-virus product?

Anything I can come up with would be pure baseless supposition.

RAV was a nice AV prior to Microsoft's purchase of it. No idea on how
it is today. RAV was the only desktop AV out there that could open up
..PST files on a drive w/out using MAPI and cleanup viruses. This was
very usefull for scanning a network share containing users .PST files.
RAV could also scan inside of other mail stores such as Moz/NS.

I agree that I'd stay away from it while in BETA status. If you are
not willing to pay for AV, there are too many free for personal use
AV's that are good. Avast, AVG, FPROT etc.

F-Prot DOS is free. F-Prot dow Windows is not.
