Microsoft Windows Network in two subnet

Hi everyone,

I have 12 computers organized as a windows workgroup, but these machines
located in two subnets. We have Windows 2000 Server workin as a router for
these subnets, WINS is installed on it.

The problem is that each computer can only see computers located in its own
subnet while browsing My Network Places. Of course, Im still able to access
the computers from the other subnet by performing search computers.

Is it possible to make computers visible across the subnets in My Network
Places/Entire Network/Workgroup so anyone from diferent subnets can easily
have access to any computer?

Thanks for any help.

The problem is that you don't have a Domain. Each subnet will have a Master
Browser chosen by "elections", however without a Domain you do not have a
Domain Master Browser which is the DC/PDC and it is needed to "consolidate"
the Browse Lists from the Master Browsers so that all machnes can know what
is in other subnets.

The most economical solution is to run all machines in one subnet. With
only 12 machines, there is no need for two subnets. A single subnet works
perfectly fine up to about 250-300 machines after which is may begin to
degrade (your mileage may vary).

Workgroups were also only intended for 10 machines. You might want to
consider a copy of Server2003 if you can come up with hardware good enough
to run it on,...then you can crate a Domain. The machine doesn't have to be
a "screamer" to start out with, it just has to be "good enough". I don't
think you are going to load it that heavy.

Thanks Phillip, I guess I'd better reorganize the whole LAN which is left
for me from another admin. Im also thinking of creating an AD domain and
promoting that Win2K Server to a DC, but there are some computers based on
Win98 and WinXP HE. Can I plug all them into a domain or I won't take any
advatage of a domain structure with such Windows.

98 and HE can function on a Domain they just can't "join" the Domain. 98
will actually log into the Domain,...I don't know about HE, I have never
used it in that environment. Making their workgroup names the same as the
Domain name will help a lot.

I would still create a Domain and bring it all into one subnet. Those 98 and
HE machines aren't going to be there forever.

Created a Domain, but still in two subnets, I'll bring it into one next week.

So now looks good, all computers can see one another in the Microsoft
network,
but there's a small issue - when we try to open one WinXP machine to see
shares on it, it takes a long, but it goes quick when look at the shares from
that same troubled computer.

I just susppect there's a conflict of master browser roles, so how can I
check it out.

Well, is it possible by anyway to manage this "browser election" process or
it goes beyond the adminisrators power?
