I've tried several times to install service packs and
critical updates; the downloading is fine but the
installation always fails. I've had two people come over
to help me, including a young man who is developing
computer software at a local university. What are we
doing wrong? Is it important to disable the Norton anti-
virus while trying to install the updates?

Thanks so much.

That was the only way I could get the download to install. Downloaded OK but on the critical updates that tried to make a restore point it always failed until I turned off Norton AV, Firewall and password mgr. The latter I did just to clean things up
I am also having problems just doing a system restore point with Norton running. Try your system restore and see if you have the same problem. Can't find much on it on the symantec.com site but did find the one article. I think it is a compatibility issue but they don't seem to like to hear directly from us unless we pay for the service. Thought I already bought it once and shouldn't it work?? It always fails and gives me a not responding in the task manager. Kind of scary going into the internet with your old trusty anti virus program running but try it, you may like it. I'd be interested in hearing how you resolved it.

FYI. I have downloaded all MS upgrades with Norton AV and
Norton Internet running and never experienced any
problems.

I too have never had any problem with installing windows updates while my Norton Anti-Virus is running. Thus Symantec will not respond to you, and I don't think they should waste their time, as the problem is a configuration issue on your end. I rather suspect that you have your security settings set to high and perhaps "script" blocking turned on or some such thing. Without more detail from you as to exact error messages or some effort to track the point at which the install fails we can only use our crystal ball to gaze into what may be happening. By the way I have all security settings set to low on the security tab in internet options and I allow all scripts and don't even use script blocking in the e:mail. Although some would argue that this is dangerous in the 2-1\2 yrs I have had XP HE I have never experianced a virus attack that Nortons didn't or couldn't handle. Good luck
