The updates stop a wide variety of problems including what you
mentioned as well as fix security and performance issues.
Every update is different.

If you are having frequent crashes I would recommend using the "Problem
Reports and Solutions" tool included in vista. From the search box in the
start menu type

problem

You should see a program called "Problem Reports and Solutions" come up in
the programs menu. on the left side you will see links for various actions,
Report all errors listed and there may be solutions for some of them. You
can also get detailed info on the crashes using this tool. Just right click
on the error and select the appropriate actions.

Some of them can, yes. But, sometimes they are pretty specific as to what
the problem is and what it fixes. But, you still want to do the updates, as
they also contain security fixes.

I do not have a Problems and Solutions on my Program Menu. Where can I find
one? Would love to know if they have a solution for my not having Hibernate
on my Home Premium.

Yes you should install most of the updates (some are optional).

Rock............
Is there any way to "hide" some of my Windows updates? I keep getting a
couple for Outlook 2003 that I REALLY don't want, but every day, Vista
reminds me of these. Surely there should be a way to hide these -- there's
a link on the Windows Update page that says "Restore Hidden Updates!"
Stumped you, huh!

Right click on the update and select Hide

OMG!!! I'm totally embarrassed. I tried everything, but never considered
right-clicking! As you wrote, it's right there for the hiding!
Thanks much.

Yes, display the list of updates, right click on the one you want to hide,
and select hide. :-)

FYI, it's best to start a new thread with your question than to post it as a
reply to an on going thread.

OK, you're right about the new thread. Sorry. This one is pretty dead by
now, so just one more thing....

What you said about right-clicking and hiding -- it works. HOWEVER, it
works only temporarily! After hiding my unwanted updates yesterday, the
same (hidden) updates showed AGAIN today. Seems like this may be something
for SP-1.

Hmm...not happening here. Hide and it stays hidden. Sorry I don't know why
it's not on your system.

If you have any updates showing it's always a good idea to get the update.
Could be a patch for a known issue or it could add some time of
functionality to the product

In theory - YES, the updates should "stop a wide variety of problems ".
But from my experience - update solve one small problem and create
other - sometime even bigger problems.
My WIE worked fine when I installed the Vista on Vista ready
machine. Now having all these automatic updates - WIE is full
of surprises and is much slower in general, comparing with IE7.
