Why is it that a person can only get the online updates from Microsoft
through IE? Why can't other browsers be used?
 
Microsoft Update uses ActiveX controls, which other browsers do not support.

You can get updates in Firefox with the IE Tab add-on, which loads the
IE rendering engine into Firefox. So it's still Internet Explorer that's
getting the updates.
