Tom

Using "Update" the program stops indefinitely:

Zone Alarm is turned off, as is antivirus.
Automatic update is turned off.
SP 1a is installed, as are all other updates published
prior to new design of "update" page.
SP2 is not installed. I am afraid to install it because
of reading that some programs and hardware might not work
with it.installed it.

Nothing other than disabling Zone Alarm has been
discovered in the knowledge base.

I am a relative beginner and have no idea as to how to
solve the problem. I don't know whether this is the
proper forum. I have tried to find a more appropriate
one, but could not find one. Nor do I know how to access
a reply on this site. Please reply to tbclarkjr
[removethis]@bellsouth.net. I surely woud appreciate some
help.

thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom :-)

Try the following and see if it helps.

Open INTERNET OPTIONS in the CONTROL PANEL. Click on the ADVANCED TAB at the
top. Scroll down to BROWSING and UN-CHECK if checked or CHECK if un-checked
the following two boxes.
ENABLE INSTALL ON DEMAND [Internet Explorer] and
ENABLE INSTALL ON DEMAND [OTHER]

Then re-boot your computer and try the update site again.

or .......

You cannot install some updates or programs

or.......

Computer stops responding (hangs) during setup when you install updates or
when you add new hardware

If still no joy, you may have some malware, spyware or parasites that are
preventing the downloads, thus, try the following:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
AdAware SE
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
