I have an A7V8X-X with amd xp-2600+ processor running at 2.083 Mhz and it
has been running really well and rock steady now for a few months. I use a
dsl connection with the VIA ethernet adapter connection on the board without
any problems. Today, I checked the Microsoft Update and there was a new
updated driver for the VIA Rhine II ethernet so I went ahead and updated the
driver. Big mistake on my part. It wiped out my network adaptor and put my
number one computer off the Internet!

I had to go to the device manager, remove the network adaptor, reboot, and
then reload the software/drivers off the Asus motherboard disk to get going
again when my Win2000 detected the new hardware. I consider myself lucky
because I seem to have got off pretty light this time.

Has any anyone else had the same problem with this update?

TIA

I have not had good luck with hardware updated from the microsoft site.
They always seem to hose up the system. Its better to get the hardware
updated from the board maker or chip makers sites.

I concur. Windows Update is constantly trying to downgrade the
latest drivers from CMedia, nVidia and VIA on my systems.

The hardware updates at MS update are always about 6 months old, best to
get the drivers from the manufacturer or MB website.

Many people have problems with drivers from the MS Update. I find it's
good to use as a guide, not a source, for 3rd party drivers. It lets me
know to check the manufacturer's web site to see if there's really
something new I might need!
