Microsoft Update vs Windows Update

At one time I seem to remember that the Microsoft Update was separate
from the Windows Update. Windows Update updated the operating system and
Microsoft Update updated programs such as Microsoft Office. Due to a
problem that I have with Office is there a way to stop the update from
ever downloading updates to it?

Microsoft Update is essentially Windows Update plus updates to Office (and
other Microsoft apps).

I'm not sure that never getting updates to Office is a good idea, but if
that's what you want to do, why not just run Windows Update instead of
Microsoft Update?

I found a way to stop the updates in the advanced options if I wish. I
have deleted the trial version of Microsoft Windows and what I want to
do is remove the downloaded updates to it. They keep showing up in the
Microsoft Update. They just fail when run but they do not leave.
