After going to Microsoft Update on my Windows XP Home system, I got a
"general installation failure" (error 0x80070643 or 1603) installation error
for MS06-33/917283 (Vulnerability in ASP.NET Could Allow Information
Disclosure). I tried to install it several times, and it failed each time.
I also tried going to the screen where you're supposed to be able to click on
the failure and get help in fixing it, and that link was DEAD. I did find an
article that told me how to go into the registry and turn on installation
logging, which got me a very long log file that was very short in useful
information.
My inclination is to do a 'system restore" and try the installation again,
since debugging/fixing this looks beyond what should be expected of any OS
user.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice about how to approach fixing the
installation problem so that I can get this security fix installed?
Thanks.
