I was advised to download the available Windows 2000
updates to improve security and proformance, which I did.
On the "recommended" download list was one for Agere
Systems PCI Soft Modem, which I installed and which I must
have misread as being the modem already in my PC. The
download seemed to freeze at the point actual installation
was complete, so I rebooted. Since then, the modem is
inaccessible. It shows only that one modem as resident and
shows it as installed and working. It shows it as
incompatible with my phone and as requiring an analog
phone. The modem worked fine before the download. Are
there two modems? If so,how can I find the old one on my
computer? The download undid my settings and I had to call
my ISP to identify my dial-up number and reenter it. Do I
have to buy an analog phone? The Agere showed as on Com
Port 3 and Com 1 and 2 as in use. I tried moving it to Com
1,thinking Com 3 didn't exist, but got same result. Duhhh.
