Microsoft UAM not kicking in with Mac OS 10.2.8

I have downloaded the latest Microsoft User Authentication Module (UAM) for
OS X (i.e., downloaded directly from Microsoft's website.) The installation
to a Mac OS 10.2.8 computer seemed to proceed flawlessly. After the
installation, the object "MicrosoftUAM.uamx" is exactly where "ReadMe.rtf"
states it should be.

However, when I authenticate to a Windows Server-based resource, I still see
the native OS X SMB authentication dialog (i.e., the Microsoft UAM is NOT
being invoked.)

I have rebooted, and I have made sure that no corresponding credentials are
stored in the "Keychain". (This is definitely the case because the native
OS X authentication dialog comes up each time asking for a password. I
purposely choose not to save to the Keychain for diagnostic purposes.) I
have also applied all currently available patches to this OS 10.2.8
installation.

Is there something else I need to do to configure OS X to use the Microsoft
UAM? Are Microsoft's installation instructions in "ReadMe.rtf" incomplete?

Hi Chris!

The MS UAM for Mac OS X is for AFP connections and not for SMB. If you
have File Services for Macintosh installed and running on your Windows
server then you will be able to use the UAM.

Hope this helps! bill

This is indeed the answer. Thanks Mr. Smith!

(When I forcibly tell OS X to use AFP, the Microsoft UAM does appear.)
