Tom

I recently purchased a dsl router and tried to connect an
xp and win 98 se. Router instructions say I have to have
Microsoft TCP/IP installed. When I add it and check the
check box, the properties button does not highlight. I
can't check it to configure the menu tabs and therefore
can't configure the router.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Try adding TCP/IP through Add/Remove Windows Components in Add/Remove
Programs. You may need your OS install disk. You need to do the same on the
98 system. TCP/IP is pretty easy to install and is the primary means by
which Windows clients communicate.

TCP/IP v6 ( which you can't configure from the user interface )
is not what you need for your router.

Remove it untill such times as you want to experiment with IPv6.

What the router's instructions were talking about was IPv4 ( 'regular'
TCP/IP. )
That is installed by default on XP, and is listed in the LAN connection
properties as
Internet Protocol ( TCP/IP ).

You may need to scroll down the list of items to see it.
