Trevor

I get this message every time I plug in or unplug a USB device. It doesn't;t
seem to cause any problems. What's it all about?

What's the fault data for that crash according to the Problem Reports and
Solutions Center control panel's View Problem History?

You;ve lost me there - where do I look for these?

In the Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel, under View
Problem History.

You can go to the Start menu and enter "Problem Reports" in the search box
and it'll show up.

THis it:

Did someone mention today how smart, excellently dressed, and overall just
excellent you are?

Is the Windows Media Player still working properly on this system? I'm
pretty sure it's not, but it'd be nice to verify.

Is this a 32-bit system? What had you installed previous to this badness
happening? From that fault information, I think you accidentally(?) did a
very bad thing by installing some very very bad software. Specifically, I
believe you installed SatelliteTVForPC 2006, which is broken and should have
been pulled from market over a year ago. How did you get that horrible
software?

This KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947541
should fix you up.

Eh??

It wasn't for a long time, but seems better recently

Yes (I think)

Too far in the dim and distant past

From that fault information, I think you accidentally(?) did a

Very likely

Have done this - will see how we go.

I was being appreciative for you bringing this crash to my attention. It's
always great to get a chance to fix things or otherwise provide solutions
and ways forward. This crash type wasn't easily detectable, but once you
look at it with the proper background, everything likely fell into place.

Hopefully you'll tell me that I was correct in my conclusions and that
you're now fixed up. *crosses fingers*

And I really would love to know where you got SatelliteTVforPC 2006 from.
That's broken software. I thought I'd worked with most major subvendors
here and that this wasn't being shipped anymore (they fixed this in their
2007), but -- somehow you at least got it and got broken by it. =\

The bad news is I still get the message that sync center has stopped working
when I plug in or remove a USB device.

What's the current exact fault information?

How many copies of "wmp.dll" are on your system? Any version of wmp.dll
that is version 10 is bogus.
Had you indeed installed SatelliteTVforPC 2006?

There was a SatelliteTVforPC elite there - now uninstalled. How do I tell if
a wimp.dll is 10 or not?

Having just gone back to using WMP rather than RealPlayer because of RP
always requesting user privileges, I've now remembered why I stopped using
WMP. When I close it down it carries on playing the file it was playing even
though it has apparently closed down (until you do a control alt delete and
see it's still running)

WMPapi.dll? That seems like bogus. What are the file properties for that
file? What's the file version?

This indicates that something, such as Sync Center, still has open reference
counts on the player indicating that the player must not shut down yet.

Given that you're crashing Sync Center, this seems related. =\
