i can not get my sidewinder to work. I have gone to the
control panel and added the drivers but it still is not
working. What can i do to fix this

Any idea which Sidewinder you're using and whether it is a game port or USB
device? If the latter, install the software from the CD that came with it
and then plug it in. If the former, plug the controller in and select
Add/Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect) in Control Panel/Game Controllers.

it is the 3d pro and a game port. when i try to use the
disk that came with the stick xp sayes i need to be an
adminastrator. sorry for the spelling

Game port software cannot be installed on Windows XP for the Sidewinder. It
was written in now unsupported vxd format. Just plug that controller in on
the game port, then go into Control Panel/Game Controllers and select Add a
new controller. When the list comes up, pick Microsoft SideWinder (Auto
Detect) and it'll install the proper drivers for it to work in Windows XP.

One side effect of using such an old controller is that you won't be able to
save "profiles" or switch the button controls in Control Panel any more, but
if the game itself supports such action in the Options section, you'll be
able to make adjustments that way.

Hi,

If you've added it according to the instructions I'll post below
and it still doesn't work, test the joystick in another computer.

Here's the instructions for both the USB and the Gameport models:

The version 4 software for USB Sidewinders is XP compatible.
It gives you a warning, you can click OK and continue installing it.
I've had the same experiences with USB cam's & other devices.

The version 3 software, isn't compatible. It uses XP's drivers instead.
USB devices just plug and play. GamePort devices need some work:

To install a GamePort controller, Plug it in, click Start / Control Panel /
Switch to Classic view if you haven't already / click Game Controllers
Click Add... / Select Microsoft Sidewinder Auto Detect / OK / OK.
