I had to reinstall my computer including Microsoft Windows XP Home.
All went well. After installing SP2 the Windows Security Centre was working
okay. I had all possibilities to lock/unlock any messages about the present
situation of the virus and firewall situation. Those messages appear once in
while (at start-up when your virusscanner is not yet running). After
installing all sorts of Windows updates etc I noticed that I lost that
handling capability. For some reason I cannot switch on/off these messages
anymore. Apparently my computer has become part of a domian with another
network supervisor. That is not what I want. What happened and what can I do
about it besides do it all over again to which I am not looking forward
because it may happen again. What went wrong? Can it hurt me?
Thanks

Are you running as the Administrator. That could be the answer to you
problem.

Extra information:
I have solved the problem. For some reason the Security Centre service was
stopped (after installation of Antispyware Beta1????).
I solved the problem by using Antispyware System Explorers and then Running
Processes. That is where I found Security Centre stopped. I activated the
process again and everything is back to normal again.
Problem solved.

Willem - Do I recall that you are also running Symantec software on this
system? As part of the installation process, Symantec, and other vendors,
McAfee, for example, ask the user whether they would like Symantec to manage
their alerts about virus definitions, for example, and recommend that the
user say Yes to this request. You may not have realized that this was
Symantec's way of suggesting that you turn off the Security Center and let
them manage things for you, but that is what that prompt does. Microsoft
Antispyware, in Windows XP through SP2, has no connection to the Security
center, and doesn't do anything to its process.

To All.
First of all: thanks for all the support.
I fell strongly for the reasoning of Donald although I cannot clearly
remember answering a question (letting NWS handling all the
messages/warnings) like that after installing Norton System Works. But if
that is the case they should warn you that MS Security Centre is shut down at
the same time. I cannot recall a message like that at all. But, it seems to
be a pretty logical answer to the problem. For all because nobody encountered
the same problem after the installation of MSAS.
I must give MSAS also some credit here. Because of the System Expolore
Running Processes capability of the program I was able to find out myself and
find the solution.

Extra: I mixed up names here. All part of a previous dicsussion. I meant Bill
Anderson instead of Donald Anadell.
Sorry Bill.

No problem on the name! This set of interactions causes some unneeded
stress. It happens that recent iterations of some other freeware
antispyware products flag the settings that turn off the virus definition
checking. The intent is to bring this to the attention of the user so that
they are aware that the Security Center has been turned off. However, most
users, like you perhaps, don't have any recollection of having allowed
Symantec or McAfee to turn off the Security Center, and are alarmed at the
finding.
