Can the MRC be installed on a Vista machine?
If you had Googled "Microsoft recovery console", you'd know.

I did Google it but didn't use the keyword 'Vista.' My HP laptop did
not come with a Vista installation disk. I'll have to do the F8 thing
and see if the recovery options are there. Thanks......

Your HP laptop most likely came with a "recovery partition"
Your manual should tell you how to access that partition upon boot up.
BUT...usually this process just erases everything on the drive and returns
it to a just purchased state.
Maybe state your specific problem and someone here might know the answer
If you want to be ready then hopefully you made the back up DVD it asked for
when you first
used the machine.
You will need an external HD to Image your Laptops HD to using a decent
imaging program
like Acronis True Image...at least once a week
You will need a set of DVD's to backup all of your personal stuff at least
once a day.
You will need to create a restore point before you install any new
software....just in case
You will need anti malware/anti virus/ software and keep it updated and use
it every 24 hrs.
You will need to use common sense when cruising the net...or opening emails.
good luck
