Is there a way to read or convert microsoft reader files .lit without
having to install all that MS crap?
Tanks

But you might want to follow this project :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/clit/

MightyKitten

but don't hold your breath - had a look as I quite fancied an
alternative to MS.

I quote:

Project UNIX name: clit
Activity Percentile (last week): 0%

0 files released, project homepage blank - looks as if this is dead,
if it ever even took it's first breath.

I may be horribly wrong, - please correct me if this is so - would
love to see some freeware reader - bound to be better than MS

Here you go

http://www.convertlit.com/
Convert LIT or clit to friends, neighbours and lovers

the program allows you to convert Microsoft Reader format eBooks into
open format for use with software or devices which are not directly
compatible with Microsoft's Reader.
