Windows XP Microsoft Publisher alternatives?

I'm not really up on this kind of software but my daughter needs to make a calendar for a place and wanted me to get her Microsoft Publisher.

I'm somewhat hesitant to spend a couple of hundred dollars for software that she'll use once.

Any alternatives someone can suggest?

The draw part of OpenOffice might do the trick, it isn't exactly the same but fairly similar

You could try putting "free calendar makers" into google and see what comes up !
or
You could try and find this little FREE program tkexe calendar I think I found it on filehippo.com or freedownloads center.com
It has about 4 or 5 different layouts, and you can drag & drop the pics from your own stock, also re-size them while on the program..... or you can delete them altogether.
