Microsoft Products: Real Name vs. Silly Name

I've been having difficulty finding the appropriate newsgroups in which to
post product-specific questions and realized that part of my problem has to
do with the naming convention of the newsgroups. I just realized that each
Microsoft product, or at least the ones I've been interested in, have both a
real name and a silly name and it appears that sometimes the real name is
used in the newsgroup name and sometimes the silly name is used.

For example, Visual Studio 2008 appears to use the silly name of Orcas...
and I just realized that the WPF technology uses the silly name of Avalon.
Is there some document that maps real names to silly names (or silly names
to real names)?

Thanks,

Jules

You can try:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx

which is a list of MS news groups. It's a bit confusing because they
pretend that Usenet doesn't exist, or only exists as an add on to MSFT.

It's probably better to look at the new group list in your new reader
(assuming OE has such a list). 'Dotnet' may be a better search term for
what you are looking for.

Orcas was VS 2008. You can now post to any .NET group (or rather the
appropriate one for your question). Katmai is SQL Server 2008, but that will
soon be released and allow the same latitude. Rosario is Visual Studio Team
System 2008, which will be final next year(?). Others

Avalon - WPF when under beta (now released)
Acropolis - Smart Client framework [in beta]
Astoria - Framework on top of WCF
Cider - WPF designer (in Visual Studio 2008)
Jasper - Data Access Framework [in beta]
Silverlight - Not a code name, but a rebranding of WPF/E (E for everywhere)
Sandcastle - Documentation builder [in beta]
Longhorn - now dubbed Windows Server 2008
Sedna - Visual FoxPro 10 [in beta]
Laguna - now dubbed SQL Server Compact (CE 3.0)
Acrylic - now Expression Design
Sparkle - now Expression Blend
Quartz - now Expression Web
Monad - PowerShell
Photon - Windows Mobile 6

I am not sure if there is a code name website out there with every single
code name, but I would imagine a good google would find one.

I am not sure there is a code name yet for Visual Studio 2### (after 2008),
as it is currently labeled Visual Studio vNext +1 (or perhaps vNext now, as
2008 is RTM).
