I need help fixing this error in microsoft powerpoint 97
The error message is "App has to quit. initialize failed"
Can someone tell me how to fix this error?
Before doing anything else, I'd re-run Setup. It'll detect your Office
installation and come up in maintenance mode; one of the options it offers
will be something like "Repair an existing installation" or words to that
effect. Select that and let it run.
If that doesn't help, Google turned up this (machine-translated from German):

I don't know that I'd trust this entirely, but it's simple enough to try; if
you want to, locate and rename the Ppintl.dll on your HDD then copy the
original from the CD to replace it. You may need to restart the PC before
Windows will let you rename the DLL.
