Microsoft pages won't open.

When I try to access www.microsoft.com, a file download
box opens that says "Getting file information: / from
www.microsoft.com. Then, naturally, I get a popup that
says "IE cannot download / from www.microsoft.com. IE was
not able to open this internet site". Same thing happens
if I try any site that is www.microsoft. The browser
works normally otherwise and will take me anywhere I want
to go. I have cleaned the cache and the history too many
times to count.
As a last resort, I tried running IE6setup.exe again to
reinstall IE. I get an error message that tells me the
file is damaged and to clear my cache and cookies. Can't
figure this one out.
Last thing...www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com works
normally. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.
