Microsoft Outlook freezes when opening Word as the editor

I can receive emails, but when trying to send a new one
(or replying) I get a message saying:

"Starting Word as your email editor ... "

And it goes no further.

I thought it could have been a virus, but my anti-virus
software is up to date and has not detected anything. I
use Microsoft Windows XP.

Please Help!
